Brief on recent Projects

Project for Community based water and health support for the children of Thanchi:

The project was initiated in May 2004 in the South East Bangladesh and will continue till April 2006 covering the geographical area of Bandarban. The project is funded by Balcomb Charitable Trust.

 

Food Security Increased through Rights Promotion and Sustainable Livelihoods Training (FoSHOL):

The first project was initiated in October 2004 and will continue till 2007 covering the geographical area of Satkhira, Khulna, Potuakhali, Noakhali, Kurigram and Sunamganj. The project is funded by European Commission (EU).

 

Empowering communities in the face of HIV / AIDS through STAR:

The duration of the project is 36 months. The objective of the project is to develop an integrated approach to individual and community empowerment in the face of HIV /AIDS in diverse countries. This will be done through practical action and reflection, providing a reference point of good practice for practitioners across Africa and Asia ensuring high quality spread of the approach from the Beacon 7 countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh; to 21 others. The project is funded by EC.

 

Kadoorie Project:

Improving the lives of Poor and marginalized Women in Kurigram –Phase II will be starting form January 2006 after the successful completion of pilot intervention in 2005. The project aims at creating women leadership within communities in order to alleviate the status of 6500 hard core poor women and improve their food security through livelihood oprtions. The duration of the project is 3 years.

 

Disaster Risk Reduction through Schools:

ActionAid International has won a new DFID project 'Disaster Risk Reduction through Schools'. It involves 7 countries, and ActionAid Bangladesh is the first country programme where this project will be piloted. The main purpose of the project is to make schools in high disaster risk areas safer, enabling them to act as a locus for disaster risk reduction and to engage the education sector fully in implementation of the Kobe agenda. The duration of the project is 5 years.

 

Creating Role Models of people with disabilities in Bangladesh in the Corporate Sector:

 

For the first time ActionAid Bangladesh has started partnership with Hong Kong Shanghai Bank with a project, “Creating Role Models of people with disabilities in Bangladesh in the Corporate Sector” The main objective of the project is to enhance the capacity and skills of university graduates with disability in order to make them competent for employment opportunities in corporate sector. A group of 20 persons with disabilities who are university graduate or currently studying at university level will be established as role models of PWDs in Bangladesh. The duration of the project is one year.   

 

Removing Cultural Barriers and Promoting Social Reintegration of Children with Disabilities and their families:

A project entitled "Removing Cultural Barriers and Promoting Social Reintegration of Children with Disabilities and their families". The project aims to create an enabling environment for disabled children by supporting theirs education, training, enhancing family income and educating the community and making others responsive to the issue of disability. The project also aims to increase the involvement of people with disabilities at all levels - with participation, social integration and legal rights. The project includes 500 children as direct beneficiaries and 1000 as indirect beneficiaries. The duration of the project is 2 years.

 

Sustainable Livelihoods Project:  

The Sustainable Livelihoods for Fisher Folk and Hardcore Poor Project, a new component of the Fourth Fisheries Project is popularly known as Fourth Fisheries project. The project introduces alternative sustainable livelihood options for 1200 households from hardcore poor and extreme poor fisher folk communities living in the corners of the country. Initially the project was funded by DFID and planned for 1 year. Considering the future potential of the viable approach of the project AAB decided to extend the time span two more years and main stream the approach of Self Help group within AAB and partner organisations it works with. The project is operational in Shatkhira, Kurigram and Patuakhali.

 

Reducing Risk of the Vulnerable Communities to Flood and Earthquake

Reducing Risk of the Vulnerable Communities to Flood and Earthquake in Bangladesh started in 15th January 2006 and will be continuing till 15th April 2007. The project is operational in three geographical locations in Bangladesh - Kurigram, Chittagong and Rangamati and covers 12693 persons. The project is funded by ECHO. (More on the project ...)
