The HIV/AIDS programme began in 1994 in Zambezia Province, Pebane District. It involved capacity building programmes for activists and work with cultural groups, which included singing, dance and drama, in order to disseminate information about STD with greater emphasis on HIV/AIDS. In 1995 these activities were expanded in the Province, to the Maganja da Costa district and in 1997, to the countrys Southern region, in the districts of Manhi?a and Marracuene, Maputo Province. From 2000 to 2002, with the emergency situation in the Central and Southern Mozambique, there were interventions on affected people, from the Accommodation Centres to different resettlement areas, within and outside the areas supported by AAMoz. In the same period, the programme increased significantly the communities' capacity and awareness through different partners, specially national NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS.
As far as our relationship with the Government is concerned in this area, we highlight support to HIV/AIDS units at district and administration posts' level and the promotion of Counselling and Home Based Care. This has enabled the development of associations of People Living With AIDS (PLWHAs), working towards a favourable legal and social environment for these people.
These set of activities aimed for: (1) A growing knowledge of the populations about the infection with HIV/AIDS and the development of the community's ability to reduce infection risks, and to respond to AIDS impact and (2), to contribute for the creation of a positive environment, which is supportive of PLWHAs and their families, and which promotes their leadership in the development and implementation of preventive programmes and those of HIV/AIDS care.
