After working for about four years, ActionAid Nigeria started the process of producing a Country Strategy Paper (CSP) for five years (2004-2008). The CSP is built upon the previous corporate and regional strategies of Fighting Poverty Together (FPT) 1999 -2004 and Ingendo as well as the current corporate strategies Rights to end poverty 2005 -2010. The CSP identifies three strategic goals that will guide our work: Working with the poor and excluded to demand and claim their basic rights Creating an enabling environment, and Enhancing gender equity and promoting womens rights In taking sides with poor and excluded people, we believe that the poor and excluded people are the primary agents of change. Poverty and injustice can be eradicated only when they are able to take charge of their lives and act to claim their rights
The CSP focuses on five thematic areas respectively:
1. Education (including cross border Commonwealth Education Fund work in Cameroun) Promoting Education for All Goals Universal Basic Education(UBE)Strengthening Civil Society engagement in education Planning and Management Action Research on Fast Track Initiative, Cost of Education e.t.c Promoting Community participation in school management Reflect approach to literacy
2.HIV/AIDS (including cross-border SIPAA work in Cameroun)Promoting Sexual & Reproductive Health & HIV/AIDS Reduction in Nigeria, Strengthening the National Response to HIV/AIDS, Adolescents Right to Know Stepping Stones
3. Conflict Management and Peace Building .Conflict Analysis and Conflict Management Early warning signals Peace Building
4. Governance and Macro Economic Issues. Increasing Citizens Participation in Governance through Public Finance Analysis Promoting pro-poor Constitution-Making and Constitutionalism Engaging with ECOWAS, NEPAD, NEEDS and Macroeconomic issues and Nigeria Social Forum
5. Gender and Womens Rights Promotion of Gender Equity Women Empowerment Gender Analysis of Policies and Programmes
Our Approach
In Rights-Based Approach, we embrace and respect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent related UN covenants and declarations. The focus of all our work is to ensure that the rights of poor and excluded people are respected, promoted, protected and fulfilled and they are, our primary stakeholder. We also direct unrelenting attention on the responsibility, both of the state and of other powerful institutions and individuals, in respecting, promoting, protecting and fulfilling the rights of poor and excluded people
