International Women Day Celebration

Focus Group discussion with CSW: Focus group discussion was initiated with commercial sex workers (street and home based) at Okara in collaboration of one of AAPks short term partners known as Aid Prevention Association of Pakistan (APAP).

 

This one day activity was aimed to highlight women issues and to show solidarity with all women especially commercial sex workers who are most vulnerable in this regard.

This was facilitated by Mr. Daud Saqlain, Senior Program, Ms.Summiya Yousaf, Program Officer Training Officer AAPk, and Area Office and Mr.Hanif, APAP. 

 

Local councilor also participated in this session and emphasized to eradicate discrimination.  Discriminatory societal attitudes towards women at all levels were the core issues highlighted in the discussion. Some sex workers openly pointed men in the discussion that they disregard them and do not pay regard rather they condemns them severally.

Panel discussion on women issues at radio: A two hour live radio program was conducted on 8th March 2006 to raise awareness on women rights in public. This was a panel discussion that was facilitated by Nadeem Fazil Ayaz, Manger Programms, Summiya Yousaf, Program Officer Training, Area Office Lahore and one of short term partners Bushra Khalique, Women Worker Help Line. A live interview with a grass root woman was also arranged during the program. This woman is running her business successfully and she got Global Entrepreneurship Award organized by UNDP.  In Pakistan 16 women entrepreneurs got this award and Irshad Bibi was one of these sixteen women. She shared her struggle, resistance and achievements in this live program. 

 

"Women rights are human rights" is one of the core topics that were discussed during this live discussion. Panelists focused that discrimination with women in any shape should be discouraged. Panelist emphasize was to raise women voices for the struggle of rights. Interestingly people called and asked their queries regarding women rights and stereotypes as well.  

 

International Women Day Celebration at Fatima Jinnah Degree College, Chona Mandi: Youth is one of the main pillars that strengthen a nations structure. Keeping in view their capacities and their role, youth was involved in celebration of international women day at Fatima Jinnah Girls College, Chona Mandi Lahore.  In this program speakers talked about women participation in decision making at all levels. Interactive theater on girls education was also performed for students in which they interacted eagerly and enthusiastically.  

Grass root women and International Women day Celebration: On 10th March, a seminar followed by role-play was organized in reference to International women day at Kahna, Lahore.  Around 150 women from grass root participated in this seminar where people from different walks of lives talked about International Day, its history and importance of women rights. During seminar a role play on girls' education was performed by a local school. This activity was organized by Anjuman Falah-e-Millat, a local non government organization and AAPk funded it partly.

 

Honour Killing issues of Boray Wala and International Women day:  Social Welfare & Development Society, a local non government organization of Boray Wala organized a program highlighting local issue of honor killing on international women day. This program was launched on cable and radio as well. AAPk funded its cable program expenses however SWDS organized this event in collaboration of local NGOs and Plan International. Awards were given to community activist women who are struggling for rights courageously.

 

Unfair Wages and violence seminar followed by rally at Lahore Press Club: Women Worker help Line, one of AAPks short term partners organized a women seminar followed by a rally against domestic violence. WWHL celebrated international women day by highlighting the issue of domestic violence and this year organization is focusing especially of domestic violence cases.

 

Development Areas programmes on International Women day: Human Development Foundation, Toba Taik Singh (DA 11), Pakistan Welfare Society, Layyah (DA 18), Rahim Yar Khan(DA 22) and Awam Dost Foundation, Bhakkar(DA 25), AAPk development areas organized and hosted different seminars, dialogues and discussions on women rights in their respective areas through their partners.

Human Development Foundation, Toba Taik Singh celebrated international women day with this theme of "Women as peace makers". Women from twelve neighboring villages participated enthusiastically. This day long women activity was consisted of different cultural dances, songs, symbolic poems and speeches on womens role in peace building at all levels. A youth group performed an illustrated theater on women as peacemaker. 

 

Pakistan Welfare Society Layyah facilitated a combine gathering of men and women. PWS titled international women day to raise women participation in decision making at all levels. This men and women gathering made a resolution that they will celebrate girls birth and will end this discrimination. They also decided to mobilize government for Girls College in Layyah.

 

Awam Dost Foundation, Bhakkar celebrated this activity with men and women in a joint gathering and women rights were highlighted there. Awam dost Foundation also developed IEC material and disseminated it to men and women.

Rahim Yar Khan's development area organized discussions and open seminars by involving youth and faculty members of local private and Government College in celebration of women day. Advocate Mr. Siddique delivered sessions on family laws which were followed by a question & answers session from students.

 

Students at Khawaja Fareed Government Post Graduate College RYK generated a debate by asking their queries from speaker on women rights. College principal Dr.Mukhtiar Ahmed Azmi thanked Rahim Yar Khan Staff for organizing such a participatory and eye opening session for students.

 

Rahim Yar Khan hosted a day long session on family laws and women in connection of international women day and its significance. This session was conducted by a lawyer however RYK organized and coordinated whole activity. By the end of this session college principal Mr. Zeeshan told,

"Before this celebration I was not aware about the background and importance of this day. Today I would like to announce equal salary packages both for men and women. So that we could eliminate discrimination in salary packages among male and female staff members of our college"
