People's Caravan for Justice and Sovereignty

The Peoples Caravan was launched in Sri Lanka on the 15th October 2005. As scheduled, the Caravan started from Dewata, Galle district in the south Sri Lanka. As scheduled the Caravan covered three districts (Galle, Matara and Hambantotta) along with the Peoples Commission team and reached Hambantotta on the 18th October 2005.

 

People's Planning Commission has conducted 4 public meetings en-route and met communities affected by tsunami. The commissioners appointed by the Peoples Planning Commission registered the issues raised by the people with regard to the lack of governance, Poor rehab support, Buffer Zone and also the larger issues of fighting against the neo-liberal agenda that are being pursued in the name of the rehabilitation initiatives. 

 

Concurrently the People's Caravan visited several communities living in camps, temporary shelters and discussed the issues relating to trade/privatization and the state accountability.
