"Hello sir, what are you doing here?" the children asked
"We are here to do fun activities with you and the other children." One of Tam Yim team answered
"Really?" asked one boy with a big smile
?Yes, and for children in grades 5 and 6 we are going to be making puppets!?
?Yipee? he said delighted "I am in grade 5, I can join in, right? We can?t wait?
The day came and the children ran excitedly to the caravan. Soon, they were picking up books, played badminton and football on the playground. As promised, the children in grades five and six started making puppets.
We met a boy in grade five, named Anucha Kamin or Arm. He was 12 years old and attended Ban Bang Krung secondary school, Phang-nga. Arm was very interested in joining in our activities. He created a puppet by drawing eyes, a nose and a big smile on his stomach. Then he moved body to make it happy and then sad. He was very joyful and happy.

Next, Arm learned about how to design and create a puppet using materials; a ball for the head and a garbage bag for the body. His puppet was bigger than everyone else?s and he gave it the name "lovely demon". When we saw his puppet, we asked "Why does the lovely demon look like him?"
We soon found out about Arm?s background. He was the youngest of a large family with grandparents, parents and two older siblings. However, his father worked in the province of Krabi and his mother lived in another area, so he lived with grandparents and called his grandmother "mum". Normally he would get up at 3 am, to warm and toast sticky rice for the evening meal. Also, he cooked sweetmeats to be taken to local coffee shop in every morning. Every weekend, he rode a motorcycle to his mother?s village, to give her food to sell.

His happiness was very simple and explained by stamping his hand with blue color and wrote with short message "Delight" on the white big sheet of fabric, one activity of the Tam Yim camp on August 12-14, 2005. This activity assured that you are the one of Tam Yim Caravan.
Arm gained much from the camp. Even more, he had a wonderful time. We usually noticed that the big boy lay down and rolled himself on the floor, joined with coach and friends, got alias as "Jack, MY DEAR : the movie".
He says "I was delighted to make new friends, join in the fun activities and meet our kindhearted coach. This camp taught me not to be rude and quarrel with other children" Arm said to enlarge the meaning of "Delight" word on the fabric.
The Tam Yim camp has been arranged with the hard work of the Tam Yim team, since May 2005. The strength of the Tam Yim camp is its ability to take the caravan to schools affected by the tsunami, communities and temporary shelter centers. The caravan includes many things including, fairy tale books, and learning and development games, sport equipment. All support the children?s creativity and imagination. Wherever the Tam Yim caravan has visited, children have been bought laughter and happiness. This encourages the team to go on.
The Tam Yim team has also added a theatre education project which includes puppets, shadow play, mask play and children play. They have worked with other theatre projects including; Phrachan Phanechon from Chiang Mai, Mod-ta-noy from Mahasarakram University, Makuachae from Payao province. They bring specialized staff that play techniques training for children and teach the children life?s lessons through drama.
The Tam Yim team have been doing many activities in Phang nga for the last 2 months, and then gathered all the schools together; Ban Bang Krung school, Ban Huey Sap Mittapap no. 61 school and Ban Tam Nang school. In total, 83 students joined the 1st Tam Yim camp on August 12-14, 2005

Tam Yim or painting a smile is a place for learning, a symbol of friendship and a place for meeting and exchanging experiences. The next step for the project is that arrange continuous activities, including having a camp every two months.
For Tim Yim?s one year anniversary, all the painting and puppets from the camps will be collected, in celebration of the camp?s achievements. Not only does Tam Yim hope to paint the smile for the children southern Thailand affected from tsunami. Tam Yim will also build a network of teams, so children in all Thailand can experience the benefits. |
