16 Day Stop violence against women

25 November is a meaningful day for all women. It is the violence against women day. ActionAid Thailand advocated with young university student at Assumtion University of Thailand on 6 December 2006

Visiting young university from journalism and communication department opened the forum on stop violence against women by movie argument, Broken wings, a film by Nir Bergman. This is a realistic drama that takes place in a middle-class Israeli neighborhood and involves the Ulman Family-Dafna and her four children.  The father has recently died under trivial circumstances and his death has left the family hurting, and in economic straits. It is the beginning of September, the first day of school. In most families this occasion generates excitement; for the Ulmans it produces one crisis after the other. As the day starts their stories develop and intertwine.  The five-year-old girl suffers from feelings of abandonment, the-ten-year-old boy tries to break the world record in the free jump (into an empty swimming pool), the teen-age boy has quit school and works handing out flyers disguises as a mouse. The two women try to function as mother. One of them, however, is herself only 17 years old.

Besides, we have an opportunity to talk with Pimpaka Torwira, Film director from “One night husband” and Arunee Srisuk, short film selector discussed with young university students from their perspectives in violence against women. “There are a lot of films mentioned about women nowsaday, but most of them rarely tell about women’s view. Our film does not fit into any criteria of the Thai market because it is so depressing. This kind of film is not popular in market-oriented situation, even though the film signals the reality of violence against women n families and in the society.  Maybe these issues are suppressed by business so that these kind of films cannot get onto the mainstream. I am very appreciate to realize that ActionAid Thailand working in this issue and advocate to the mass media” Said Pimpaka, film director.

Arunee adding more that “There are many organizations working in women rights including Government but less than another country in Asia.  I make an effort to select a good movie in term of family relationship, cultural and ethics present to audience which they can learn from these movies. Arunee said at the end.
