Student fights against poverty

In conjunction with Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), ActionAid Thailand recently organized an "I will fight poverty" event at two Thai universities to raise awareness among students about poverty issues. The events took place at Chulalongkorn and Thammarart universities on the 27 and 30th June, respectively.

More than 1,000 students joined the events, becoming active in Thailand?s fight against poverty through writing about "what can we do to end poverty in Thailand" on the whiteband that have become the symbol of fighting poverty around the world, putting the ?I will fight poverty? tattoo on their bodies, making anti-poverty pins and discussing poverty issues with ActionAid staff. Many students had never known about the WTO, GMO, and FTA and were eager to learn more about poverty in Thailand. In addition, the event at Thammasart University featured a screening of the film The Motorcycle Diaries, which follows Che Guevara as he joined the revolution against injustice, and five student-made short films about poverty issues.

"It's a very interesting event. I've never known that WTO, GMO, or FTA all contribute to poverty issues before. I will surely seek more information about this, and I hope I can do more to help", were the reactions expressed by many students.  Some of them became active immediately, signing up to be volunteers with ActionAid to help us run events in the future.
