AMF Journalism Fellowships on human rights 

5/10/06: Asia Media Forum (AMF), a network of journalists from across Asia, invites applications for AMF Journalism Fellowship 2006-07 from self-motivated working journalists who aspire to improve their coverage of human rights more deeply. The fellowship provides to 20 middle career (below 40 years) print and electronic media journalists an opportunity to work in the field in various Asian countries on certain themes relating to human rights such as Womens Rights, Right to Education, Right to Food, Right to Human Security in Conflict and Emergencies (specially Tsunami related issues), Right to Life and Dignity in the Face of HIV and AIDS and Right to Just and Democratic Governance. "Synthesis report on the trafficking of Vietnamese women and children" released

27/9/06A recent study carried out in Southern Vietnam, China, Cambodia, and Taiwan (China) by ActionAid International Vietnam (AAV) found that trafficking often occurs within the context of migration. Many women knowingly weigh the risks of migration and still decide to go, but are vulnerable and can be trafficked. This study was conducted as the first activity under the 3-year sub-regional initiative named “Combating cross border trafficking of Vietnamese women and children” to better understand the situations women face before departure, at their destination points and when they return. The initiative originated from AAVs analysis that most regional and national interventions in combating human trafficking have focused largely on prevention and reintegration, while lack of on-site interventions at the womens destination points. Half of a million Vietnamese footwear jobs at risk: where is the balance between trade and development?

 

Hanoi, 19 June 2006 - That is the question co-raised by the non-governmental organization ActionAid and Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) to the European Commission (EC) in a report to be officially launched today, 19 June in Hanoi. The report is the outcome of an action research into 21 footwear enterprises conducted by ActionAid and Lefaso in the first half of May, nearly one month after the EC imposed a provisonal anti-dumping duty of 4.2% on Vietnamese upper leather shoes exported to EU. The workshop was held on 17 May, 2006 by Hanoi Federation of Labour in coordination with ActionAid Vietnam. The workshop was a forum for policy makers, employers and workers to share views on labour relation and living conditions of workers. This activity is under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) theme of ActionAid.

EU anti-dumping duty on upper leather shoes threatens livelihood of half million workers

From 25 April to 11 May, 2006, ActionAid Viet Nam and Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) sent a research team to 20 footwear companies in both the north and south of Vietnam to study workers' situations if the EC anti-dumping duty on upper leather shoes is raised in September...
